Mercedes Benz Fashion Week
Day 1: February 7, 2013
Lincoln Center, New York, NY
On the first day of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, designer Richard Chai enlisted an
innovative military depiction for his Fall 2013 collection. While bringing a quintessential palette of olive green, brown, and navy blue, Chai also incorporated bursts of violet. Some garments even included lustrous metallics and cloud-like patterns. His collection combined a conservative appearance with chic, modern materials.
Chai created a contemporary style for men, which still reflected traditional military elements. Shirts with cargo pockets, bold plaid suits, and impeccably tailored coats charmed the audience. The women emulated a similar style, but with ladylike elegance. Cropped jackets matched with knee length skirts and lengthy, structured coats added to the militant theme.
With an overall hyper-masculine design, Chai still managed to integrate femininity in a romantic way. Satin and sheer detailed dresses beautifully flowed down the runway. A lovely jacquard fabric in lavender was used on a pant suit and piping detail accentuated the womanly silhouettes.
Although Chai’s designs had a generally combative style, his ability to incorporate
romantic elements relaxed the edgy demeanor. Every garment ranging from the various coats to the peplum tops was well polished and sophisticated. Bravo Zulu to Richard Chai for creating a collection that was flawlessly executed.
