The 2013 spring/summer collection of Henry Cotton is set in the Tuscan city of Porto Ercole, evoking—at least in my mind—images of the dolce vita, or “the sweet life.”
Don’t get me wrong, I not beet born yet, but I did not trail too long after! Nevertheless, Italy was rising from the ashes of the postwar, experiencing the economic miracle of these boom years.
Newfound wealth led some to a carefree life of seaside vacations, resorts, and luxurious styles at best. Foreigners flocked to Italy’s rediscovered beauty.
Seersucker pants, ropey sole espadrilles, neck scarves, multi-layering, and cardigans—some of the styles that did carry over into my generation. Ah, the sweet life!
